Opposition Wants Help With Milk Prices
Friday July 04th 2008 07:58am EDT
The Opposition says it fears the increase in the price of milk may be an indicator of more problems in the future for low-income families. The price of fresh milk climbed eight cents a litre this week, the second increase this year. Opposition Human Resources Critic Roland Butler says this makes it harder for lower income families to afford healthy food. Butler says given the impact of high fuel prices on production, government should help ease the burden by examining subsidies for health foods like milk, further tax reductions for low and middle income families, increases in the food allowance for income support recipients and subsidies to encourage development of local agriculture production.
